El Harissa – Tannourine: Origin homeland of Our Lady of Harissa

Located at a height of 1750 meters above sea level, El Harissan is a small  agricultural village nestled in the upper mountains of Tannourine El Fawqa, in the middle of the road leading from Tannourine to Hadath El Jebbeh.


The village is considered as an important heritage sites in Lebanon, it comprises the historical church of the Virgin Mary, the original church of one of the most important catholic shrines in Lebanon, Our Lady of Harissa.


As per the historians, El Harissa is one of the first inhabited Christian villages and Our Lady of Harissa was one of the churches that was built to honor and venerate the Mother of God.

In the distant past, conflicts took place with neighborhood hamlets, the Church was burned and  El Harissa was deserted from her original civilians who moved to the town of Daroun in Keserwan, where they built the Church of Our Lady of Harissa, which later became Our Lady of Lebanon.


With time, the locals have restored the church and its now an important pilgrimage site attracting visitors from all over Lebanon, specially during the month of August, for the occasion of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.
